What to expect from your new birds
- Beyond eggs, a laying chicken provides valuable services such as pest control and fertilization.
- You have another manager of insects and weeds in your yard
- We suggest getting 6-10 hens if you want to average 2 dozen of fresh eggs each week.
- Many times when we deliver your new chickens they might have eggs in the crate.
- Egg collection should happen two to three times a day (in the morning and the evening).
- Unwashed eggs will last around two weeks unrefrigerated and about three months in your refrigerator.
- Please make the time and do so research on proper care of your hens as we are just giving you the opportunity to buy ready to go birds.

Daily
Collect eggs
fill waterer with fresh water
fill feeder
Weekly
Fill grit/oyster shells
Observe the chickens for signs of health problems.
Are they eating the feed or foraging? Are they beginning to molt? If parasites are suspected, physically inspect your chickens
Monthly
Use a broom and remove cobwebs and dust from coop
Clean up poop off of the roosting bars with a flat shovel
Add one inch of pine shavings to the coop. Cover all poop and old bedding.
Use herbs in the chicken coop. Mint deters rodents. Basil helps.
Every Six Months
Remove the bedding and put into a wheelbarrow. As the wheelbarrow fills, empty in compost.
Add four inches of pine shaving to the coop. Evenly cover the entire floor of the coop and nesting box.
